Did You Know

Ellen Cannon, professor, political science, presented a paper titled "the Weakest Link — Converting Weakness to an Asset: Physicians as Critical Responders" at the National Homeland Security Summit in Washington, D.C., in March.

Marian Gidea, professor, mathematics, directed the U.S. National Collegiate Mathematics Championship Finals Problem Solving Competition, which was held at NEIU.

Emily Good, instructor, geography and environmental studies, serves on the board of directors for the Geographical Society of Chicago. She also is secretary for the Illinois Geographical Society and chair of the society's annual meeting, which was held at NEIU in April.

Dennis Grammenos, associate professor, geography and environmental studies, presented a paper titled "Ethnoscaping in Global City" at the Urban Affairs Association's annual meeting in Chicago in March. He also served as a panelist and presented "From the Streets of Chicago: Neighborhood Scale Perspectives on Gentrification in the Neoliberal City" at the Association of American Geographers annual meeting in Las Vegas in March.

Students of Richard Hallett, associate professor, linguistics, have co-authored a paper that has been accepted for publication in the journal English Today. The article is titled "Maltese English and the Nativization Phase of the Dynamic Model" and was written for Hallett's World Englishes class.

Jeffrey Kowalkowski, instructor, music, wrote the article "Techniques for Thwarting Hegemony: Anti-Communication and Gesture-Inhibiting Musical Material as Compositional Resource in the Music of Herbert Brun," which was published in the summer 2008 issue of the journal Perspectives of New Music.

Monika Mihir, assistant professor, geography and environmental studies, presented "Scalar Variability in Debris Flow Fan Topography, Eastern Owens Valley, CA" at the Association of American Geographers annual meeting in Las Vegas in March.

Jorge Perez, administrative director, Ensemble Espanol, has been selected for inclusion in the 2009-2010 edition of Montclair Publishing's "Who's Who in North America."

Steven Riess, distinguished professor, history, recently published the book "The Chicago Sports Reader: 100 Years of Sports in the Windy City."

Edward Stuart, professor, economics and international/intercultural studies, was a panelist for a discussion held at Roosevelt University about the pros and cons that would result if Chicago wins the bid to host the 2016 Olympics.

Kim Tracy, executive director, University computing services, wrote the article "Narrative in Project-related E-mails," which was published in the March/April 2009 issue of IEEE Potentials magazine.
