NEIU Composer to be Featured in Upcoming Ruth Page Dance Series Performance

Later this month, the Ruth Page Dance Series at NEIU will present Danceworks Chicago in a program that will feature choreography by Alex Ketley set to a musical/sound composition by the winner of a competition held exclusively for NEIU students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

A movement-based work, Ketley's If Ever (an Ocean) Relinquished was created without a specific soundscape in mind. Interested in the effect of sound/music on the presentation and perception of dance, Ketley and Danceworks Chicago have invited musicians, DJs, and spoken word artists to submit their original musical/sound scores through a competition.

Silvino da Silva, director of marketing and communications, Ruth Page Dance Series, said, "This dance work can be set to different types of music. The opportunities for creativity are endless."

For their April performance on the NEIU campus, Danceworks Chicago will perform the movements choreographed by Ketley set to a score by the winner of a competition held exclusively for the NEIU community. The winner of the contest will be selected just prior to the performance. Da Silva said that there are plans to hold similar competitions for future performances of the work across the Chicago area.

The NEIU performance will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 in the Auditorium. For more information and tickets, please call the NEIU Box Office at ext. 4636.
