Amy Gurvis, student, linguistics, presented a paper titled “No Child Left Behind, Or Are They?” at the 76th Southeastern Conference on Linguistics in New Orleans.
Jill Hallett, alumna, presented a paper titled “More Attention, This Issue Needs: Indo-Aryan Constituent Order Transfer in English” at the 76th Southeastern Conference on Linguistics in New Orleans. Hallett also won the Steve Gross Award for the Best Paper on Language Contact, Pidgins, Creoles, Code-switching, or L1 Attrition for this paper.
Richard Hallett, associate professor, linguistics and Judith Kaplan-Weinger, professor, linguistics, jointly presented a paper titled “Banal Bilingualism: Written Code-switching in Tourism” at the 76th Southeastern Conference on Linguistics in New Orleans. Accompanying Hallett and Kaplan-Weinger at the conference were linguistics alumnae Jill Hallett and Laila Hualpa, and current student Amy Gurvis. They all presented papers of their own at the conference.
Laila Hualpa, alumna, presented a paper titled “Measuring Aggressiveness in Joint and Solo Presidential Press Conferences” at the 76th Southeastern Conference on Linguistics in New Orleans.
Joan Marie Johnson, lecturer, history, has co-edited the new book “South Carolina Women: Their Lives and Times, Volume 1”. The book is the first of a three volume series which examines the lives and experiences of South Carolina women.

Allen N. Shub, professor, management, has been appointed to the nine-member Psychology Alumni Advisory Board of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Salme Harju Steinberg, president emerita, has an autobiographical essay titled “Wisdom is a Butterfly: Meaning from Legacy and Journey” in the recently published bilingual edition of the book “Footprints of Success in the Academy: Personal Stories by American Higher Education Leaders” in English and Chinese. The book is the first of a four-volume overview of American higher education intended for academic communities in China.
Jonathan Teuber, assistant director, sponsored programs, was recently selected by the U.S. Department of Education to serve as a field reader for its 2009 American Indian Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities Construction Grants competition.
Russell Zanca, associate professor, anthropology, received a summer research grant from the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research to work on labor migration issues in Uzbekistan. He plans to work in the Ferghana Valley in August.
