Out of the Studio, Into the Street

Santiago Vaca, assistant professor, art, led his 2009 summer painting class through the complex process of mural painting. Located in the historic Old Irving Park neighborhood, the mural now brightens the once grim and gray underpass at Pulaski Road and Avondale Avenue. Vaca and 18 students spent about 14 hours a week for 6 weeks designing, planning and painting the mural. "My goal was to take students out of the studio and do a neighborhood project," said Vaca. "It was a very positive experience."
