NEIU In the Media

A visit to NEIU on August 6 by Governor Pat Quinn to sign a bill banning texting while driving was featured in news stories published in the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Southtown Star, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Naperville Sun and the Galesburg Register-Mail and broadcast on CBS2 Chicago and NBC5 Chicago.

Richard Hallett, professor, linguistics, was featured in an article that appeared in the August 5 issue of the Journal Review. The story reported on Hallett’s recent receipt of a Fulbright Fellowship to study tourism in India.

Edward Stuart, professor, economics and international/intercultural studies, was quoted in the cover story of the August 3 issue of BusinessWeek magazine. The article discussed the impact of the current economic crisis on the Baby Boomer generation. Stuart also was quoted in a story about expired unemployment benefits that was published on CNN.com on July 17 and a story about the unemployment rates on Forbes.com on June 18. The Chicago Sun-Times published a letter to the editor submitted by Stuart on July 21.

Mark Wilcockson, vice president for finance and administration, and Jonathan Gronli, student, were interviewed for a story published in the Chicago Sun-Times on August 2 about tuition increases at Illinois public universities for the 2009-2010 academic year.

President Sharon Hahs and her husband, Billy Hahs, were photographed for an article that was published on July 27 in Sky & Telescope. The couple, who have traveled the world to view solar eclipses, went to Kiribati, an island in the Pacific Ocean, for an eclipse on July 22.

Steven Reiss, distinguished professor, history, was quoted in a July 22 article in the American Chronicle about the business of Major League Baseball in tough economic times. Reiss said that the St. Louis Cardinals actually saw increased attendance during the Great Depression, contrary to attendance rates at other ballparks. He also was quoted in The Wall Street Journal on May 5 about the habit of American spectators at sporting events remaining in their seats for most games.

Rohit Joshi, administrative aide, Learning Center, was interviewed for a story on WGN-AM on July 21. The story reported on the total solar eclipse on July 22.

Michael Melton, director of choral activities, was included on a panel of experts who were interviewed for a story with tips for singing in public. The story was published in the Chicago Tribune on June 9, LJWorld.com on June 30 and the Wichita Falls Times Record News on July 20.

Ensemble Espanol’s gala performances of “Flamenco Passion” were very favorably previewed and reviewed in the Windy City Times on June 10, on Examiner.com on June 25 and in the Chicago Sun-Times on June 29.

Hamid Akbari, associate professor, management, was interviewed for a story that was broadcast on WBEZ-FM’s news show “Eight Forty-Eight” on June 25. Akbari provided commentary about Iran’s presidential election.

Luis Valenzuela, Chicago Teachers’ Center, was featured in Extra News on June 10 and interviewed on June 12 by Telemundo and NBC5 News. Valenzuela served as director of the Chicago Independent Film Festival.

The Chicago Mexican and Latino Book Festival, which was held at NEIU in May, was featured in an article published in the May 13 issue of Hoy.

Rebeca Lamadrid-Quevedo, coordinator of student retention and community outreach, El Centro, was interviewed for a program titled “punto de contacto” broadcast by La Tremenda, WRTO-AM on April 28. Lamadrid-Quevedo talked about a housing workshop held at El Centro.
