NEIU In The Media
Katrina Bell-Jordan, chair and associate professor, communications, media and theatre, was featured on Cleveland.com on November 15. The story reported that Bell-Jordan was one of seven people inducted into the Charles F. Brush High School Alumni Association's Wall of Achievement.
The Rockford Register Star published a story on November 15 about the philanthropy of the late Gussie Ware, a former NEIU faculty member. The story also reported on Ware's lasting influence on her students and the Golden Eagle Award she was posthumously honored with at NEIU's Annual Meeting.
WFLD-TV, "FOX 32 News," interviewed three NEIU students for a story broadcast on November 24 about tuition reimbursement for employees of the Water Reclamation District. The students talked about how they balance their studies with full-time jobs and caring for family members.
Lisa Hollis-Sawyer, associate professor, psychology and women's studies, and coordinator, gerontology, was quoted in a story published by WebMD on November 26. She discussed factors that determine who takes on the responsibility of caring for aging parents.
On November 27, the Pioneer Press featured Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater, in-residence at NEIU. The story reported on the Ensemble's recent tour of China. The Ensemble also participated in Chicago's 2008 Thanksgiving Day parade, and the dancers and float were featured in a photo in the November 28 issue of Hoy.
The November 28 issue of desiTALK and the December 5 issue of India Post featured the NEIU Indian Students Association and the Diwali festival celebration they sponsored on campus. The stories included photos of NEIU President Sharon Hahs; her husband, Billy Hahs; Lawrence Frank, provost and vice president for academic affairs; and Rohit Joshi, Center for Teaching and Learning.
Maureen Gillette, dean of the College of Education, was interviewed by Diverse Issues In Higher Education for a story published on December 16. Gillette discussed President Barack Obama's choice of Arne Duncan, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, as his new Secretary of Education.
Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater, in-residence at NEIU, had its December performance previewed in both the December 19 Chicago Sun-Times and the December 18 Chicago Reader.
WGN-TV News reported on Rep. Sara Feigenholtz's announcement to run for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the resignation of Rahm Emanuel. Feigenholtz, an alumna of the University, rented space on campus for her campaign announcement on January 6.
Erica Meiners, associate professor, educational leadership and development, was quoted in a story in the January 7 issue of the Windy City Times. She discussed Arne Duncan's recent appointment as U.S. Secretary of Education and the postponement of the Pride School campus of the North Lawndale Social Justice School, which would have focused on the needs of LGBTA youth.
June Sochen, professor emerita, history, was featured as a guest columnist in the January 10 issue of the Naples News. Sochen advocated a return to vocational education in her column.
On January 13, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Adis Blazevic, a freshman at NEIU, had been selected as a recipient of tickets from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin's office to the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama.
A story published on January 16 on MSNBC.com included quotes by Ed Stuart, professor, economics and international/intercultural studies. Stuart said that workers younger than 30 years old are among the hardest hit with job losses.
June Terpstra, instructor, justice studies, was quoted in a story published on January 20 on IslamOnline.net. Terpstra discussed race and culture in relation to Barack Obama's election as President of the United States.
On January 21, the Chicago Tribune online edition published photos from the Inaugural Balls held in Washington, D.C. Murrell Duster, dean, academic development, and Trustee Grace Dawson were photographed at the Illinois Gala.
Mark McKernin, chair and professor, art, was quoted in a story published in the January 22 issue of the Chicago Tribune. McKernin serves on a committee working to establish a sculpture garden and healing park along the Chicago River near Lawrence Avenue.
The January 24 issue of Information Week included quotes by Kim Tracy, executive director, university computing. Tracy discussed some of the frustration and satisfaction he experiences with various technology vendors.
